To the Editor — Monkeypox virus, in the genus Orthopoxvirus, causes regular outbreaks of disease in endemic areas of Central and West Africa1. Since 13 May 2022, cases of monkeypox have been reported in European countries and North America, outnumbering the imported cases from previous outbreaks outside endemic countries2. Previous imported cases have included 71 suspected cases in the United States in 2003, which were due to importation of rodents from Africa, and one nosocomial case from an imported case in the United Kingdom3,4. Transmission seems to happen during close or sexual contact; although monkeypox virus has been detected in the air, there are no confirmed cases of airborne transmission during the current global outbreak.
