It was my fate to be born a week after Adolf Hitler became Chancellor (the leader) of Germany, so that my childhood including six years of school were influenced by the prevailing political system. Remaining memories for me are Kristallnacht, the start of World War 2, work with prisoners of war on the farm of my grandfather, the fire-bombing of Hamburg and other German cities, and the flood of refugees from the eastern provinces of Germany.

Our family lived in the countryside, and since my mother was almost blind, much of the responsibility for gardening and food preparation had to be carried out by us children. Both experiences turned out to be helpful in my later career in nutrition.
