Abstract
The application of the hydrogen peroxide—sodium thiosulphate redox system to induce graft polymerization of methyl methacrylate onto wool fibers was investigated under various conditions. The effects of solvents monomer concentration, concentration of initiator, and polymerization time were studied. It is shown that dioxane solvent, which acts as a penetrant, is necessary for graft polymerization.Modified properties of wool fibers grafted with methyl methacrylate were investigated and several properties have been improved. The mechanism of graft polymerization is believed to take place through free radicals on the keratin backbone.
