Abstract
The cationic polymerization of α-methylstyrene by binary metal oxides at 30°C gave oligomers, especially dimers and trimers, as major products. These dimers [Y. Kawakami et al., Chem. Lett., 13 (1980)] and trimers were separated and identified. A reaction scheme has been proposed on the basis of a study of the effects of water, and pyridine as a poisoning base on catalytic activity, product distribution, and isomer distribution of the dimers and trimers. It seems that there are at least two different active sites which give olefin oligomers and indan ring containing oligomers, respectively.
