Abstract
Adsorption of poly(4-vinylpyridine) onto a nonporous silica (Aerosil 130) from its nitroethane solution at 25°C was studied by IR spectroscopy and UV spectroscopy. The nitroethane was found to be essentially a theta solvent for poly(4-vinylpyridine). The observed frequency shift of the silanol groups for poly(4-vinylpyridine) is attributed to the hydrogen bonding between the nitrogen atoms of adsorbed poly(4-vinylpyridine) and silanol groups. Adsorbance (A) was determined by UV spectroscopy, while the fraction of surface sites occupied (θ) and the fraction of adsorbed segments (p) were determined by IR spectroscopy. The values of A and θ in the plateau region increased with increasing molecular weight. The values of p were independent of molecular weight. The data in the plateau region were compared with the theoreis of Roe, Silberberg, and Scheutjens and Fleer based on a lattice model, and qualitative agreement was found between theory and experiment.
