I was pleased to be asked to chair this second annual meeting looking at clinical audit in Ophthalmology.

We all understand that clinical audit is an important and integral part of today’s clinical practice—it is how we demonstrate that we constantly work to develop and improve our services to ensure robust clinical governance and effective clinical practice.

This second annual gathering of clinicians was a highly interactive meeting organised and sponsored by Novartis planned in response to requests from ophthalmologists who were keen to learn the correct and utilise best methodology for audits and share lessons learnt.

The agenda was designed to provide the ‘nuts and bolts’ of how to perform an effective audit, and speakers experienced in the field shared best practice. It also provided insights from technical experts on the use of electronic medical record systems and statistical analysis.

The posters submitted to the meeting were evaluated by an independent panel. Ten posters that best demonstrated good-quality audit were selected for a ‘rapid fire’ presentation to the audience.

The feedback from this meeting was overwhelmingly positive, and we look forward to sharing the key points with you in this supplement.
