    It is our pleasure to publish this October 2021 special issue of The Journal of Antibiotics, “Approach toward molecular targeted therapy for cancer using microbial products”, focusing on microbial secondary metabolites targeting molecules or signal transduction systems related to cancer development. We would like to thank Profs. Masaya Imoto and Manabu Kawada, the coordinators of this special issue, who made full use of the network they have built up to date to gather eminent authors. Without them, we would not have been able to publish this special issue. We would also like to express our deepest gratitude to those who responded to the call of the coordinators and contributed articles in spite of the fact that COVID-19 infections were not yet under control and research environments were not ready.

    It is our pleasure to publish this October 2020 special issue of The Journal of Antibiotics “Secondary Metabolites from Mushrooms”, focusing on the compounds produced by mushrooms or cultured mycelia of mushrooms. We are extremely grateful to all the researchers for their diligence in contributing their work, as this issue was processed during the unprecedented time of the coronavirus pandemic. We would like to thank the coordinators, Profs. Timm Anke and Kazuro Shiomi, for approaching eminent researchers in the field individually for this issue, and especially Prof. Anke for contributing the opening editorial.

    This August 2020 issue of The Journal of Antibiotics is dedicated to Prof. William Fenical, honoring his long career in the study of marine natural products. We are grateful to all his friends and colleagues who contributed to this issue, as well as Prof. Fenical himself for his cooperation and for contributing an opening Editorial looking back at the evolution of marine microbial natural products chemistry research. We thank section editors Prof. Hiroshi Tomoda and Dr. James McAlpine for their hard work as coordinators in planning and organizing this issue. Without any of the participants, our project could not have realized, under this unprecedented time of coronavirus outbreak.

    It is our pleasure to publish this December 2019 issue of The Journal of Antibiotics, which contains reviews and articles describing the past and future prospect and the potential of nucleoside antibiotics research. Former colleagues and academic juniors of Dr. Kiyoshi Isono, an Emeritus Member of the journal, contributed to this issue with respect to his longstanding contribution to the field. We would like to thank Dr. Hiroyuki Osada for planning and coordinating this issue and all the authors for their contributions.

    We are honored and pleased to dedicate this issue of The Journal of Antibiotics to Prof. Samuel J. Danishefsky. His contributions and lasting impact on the organic chemistry community are celebrated here through outstanding articles contributed by his academic progenies. We would like to thank Profs. Takeshi Kitahara, Dirk Trauner, Masayuki Inoue, and Dr. Keiichi Ajito for organizing this issue, all the authors for their contributions, and Prof. Yitzhak Tor for his support as a section editor. We are grateful to Ms. Kaitlin Draws, who has served as our contact. Above all, we deeply thank Prof. Danishefsky for his support and for contributing a heartwarming letter.     The February issue of The Journal of Antibiotics is dedicated to Professor KC Nicolaou for his great scientific contribution to total synthesis of highly complex and biologically important natural products. We are grateful to each of the contributors worldwide and particularly to Prof. Nicolaou for his continuous support with organizing this effort. We would like to thank Drs Keiichi Ajito and Nicolas Winssinger for their great devotion in planning and coordinating this issue.

    The January issue of The Journal of Antibiotics is dedicated to Professor Hamao Umezawa on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of global kanamycin marketing. He was a board member of The Journal of Antibiotics from its first issue in 1947 until his death in 1986 and contributed to it gaining its reputation as a leading international journal. We would like to thank his friends and followers who contributed to this special issue, as well as Managing Editor Dr. Yoshikazu Takahashi and Dr. Manabu Kawada for planning and coordinating this issue.

    We are very honored and pleased to dedicate this May issue of The Journal of Antibiotics to Professor Satoshi Ōmura, in recognition of his 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine and his other great achievements. Accordingly, the issue also includes a list and overview of all 181 new compounds he has discovered in his 50-year career, encompassing nearly 500 compounds total. We are grateful to have received so many contributions from researchers all over the world, who hold Professor Ōmura in high esteem. We would like to thank Managing Editor Dr. Kazuro Shiomi, the coordinator of this issue, for his hard work in planning and coordinating this very special publication.

    We are very honored and pleased to dedicate this special issue to Professor Julian E. Davies, a longtime board member of The Journal of Antibiotics, and his outstanding achievements in antibiotics research. We would like to thank all his friends and colleagues who contributed to this issue. The issue was organized with the invaluable support of the coordinator, Dr. Morimasa Yagisawa, and Dr. Kunimoto Hotta, who have a longstanding and close friendship with Professor Davies, along with editor Dr. Minoru Yoshida, who organized the reviewing process.     This issue is dedicated to the memory of Dr Lester A Mitscher, Professor Emeritus of Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Kansas and longtime board member of The Journal of Antibiotics, who passed on May 8, 2015.
