About the Editors

Editor-in-Chief

Cheryl Xu, PhD
North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC, USA

Dr. Cheryl Xu is a Professor at the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at NC State University. She is an expert with 20+ years of experience in multifunctional ceramic materials, high-temperature wireless sensing, and artificial intelligence (AI) for process modeling and real-time control. Dr. Xu is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).

Associate Editors

Dianne Chong, PhD
Bellevue, WA

Dr. Chong is currently retired from the Boeing Company where she worked for almost 30 years. Her job at the company encompassed managing materials and manufacturing for research and development and production support through the life cycles of all of Boeing's products. She was also responsible for hiring and workforce development of the materials and manufacturing people.

Thomas Kurfess, PhD
Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA USA

Professor Kurfess' research focuses on the design and development of advanced manufacturing systems targeting secure digital manufacturing, additive and subtractive processes, and large-scale production enterprises.

Ralf Riedel, PhD
Technical University of Darmstadt, Darmstadt, Germany

My current research interest is focused on two research areas, namely i) molecular synthesis of advanced structural and functional ceramics for ultra-high temperature and energy-related applications as well as ii) ultra high pressure materials synthesis.

Shaoming Dong, PhD
Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy Of Sciences, Shanghai, China

Prof. Shaoming Dong has been conducting works on fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composites (CMC) and carbide ceramics. He has intensively studied the sintering, microstructure, mechanical property, and toughening mechanism of carbide ceramics and has proposed new design concepts for CMCs. He has developed the forming and densification techniques for large size SiC and CMC parts of complex shapes, and devoted to engineering applications of these materials.

Hejun Li, PhD
Northwestern Polytechnical University, China

Dr. Hejun Li is a Professor in Northwestern Polytechnical University, and an Academician in China Academy of Engineering. His research interests mainly rely on (1) the high performance composite materials; (2) Anti-oxidation coatings; (3) Material forming processing.

Ajay Malshe, PhD
Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN, USA

Ajay “AJ” P. Malshe is R. Eugene and Susie E. Goodson Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Agriculture and Biological Engineering (by Courtesy) at Purdue University. He is the Inaugural Director of the Materials and Manufacturing Research Laboratories (MMRL) and a Co-Director of Purdue’s Engineering Initiative (PEI) for eXcellence in Manufacturing and Operations (XMO). He has a collective professional experience of 40 years, partly overlapping, in industries (as a Founder, Board Member, and CTO of NanoMech now VinTech Nano Materials; acquired in 2018 by VinTech International) and academia. He has gained a national and international reputation in advanced manufacturing, multifunctional-resilient-sustainable bio-inspired designing, functional multi-materials, and system integration and productization. Over the decades, application areas of his interest and contributions are biomanufacturing for future protein foods and farms at the point of need, heterogeneous microelectronics for high-density systems, nanomanufacturing for extreme machines, in-space servicing, assembly, and manufacturing (ISAM).
